Uncharted Territory: Maunalua Bay As A Pilot Site For Limu Kohu Restoration
Restoration is rarely about perfect conditions. More often, it is about possibility.
As part of our NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy grant, Symbrosia is developing scalable, community-informed protocols for restorative aquaculture of limu kohu (Asparagopsis taxiformis). The purpose of this project is not simply to grow limu in tanks. It is to understand where, how, and under what conditions outplanting can succeed in Hawaiʻi’s nearshore environments.
For our pilot site, we chose Maunalua Bay on Oʻahu. Not because it is pristine. But because it is prepared.
